How Long Does Making My WordPress Website Take?

I hear this question quite often from clients and thought I would answer it as best I could. If you are in the market to hire someone to build your website, or if you are a designer/developer perhaps this explanation will help.

I’ve decided to use the power of video to convey my answer. I find this format to be more efficient in terms of getting my point across. I have more improvements to come for my future use of video. So, if you can be patient, the quality of videos will improve in the future with the coming rollout of the ‘realigned‘ berchman.com.

  • I find that there's a scale, where it can tip towards the developer or the client. Putting rock-solid process in place definitely lightens the load on the developer side, and at the same time, being extremely clear on what the client deliverables are every step of the way, with frequent reminders to the client, can lighten the load on the client side. Ultimately, its the developer's responsibility to accelerate the process on both sides.

    You're rocking the sideburns.

Great post berchman! Such great points here. So many variables are at play, there's no easy answer–especially when we do it right! 🙂

  • Tyler, thanks for the comment. I would agree that as a developer you should do as much as you can but there does come a point when the client needs to step up and provide feedback/direction.

Tough question… especially when a lot of it depends on the client itself.

Clear vision, good specs, specific goals, etc, are as important as good communication between the site maker and the client.

    Great topic.

  • Wow if only all of my potential clients watched this video…my life would be so much easier.

Great video blog, Berchman. I agree with you on the timing part. One additional thought to add is the challenge with various stakeholders on the client side. It would help and speed up the process even more if the client would bring all feedback together at once instead of sending feedback by departments or teams. Everyone has a comment when it comes to a website. To sum up my comment, I recommend the client have an internal meeting to ensure they collect and agree on the final feedback before sending to the developer/contact creating the site. Thanks again for the post.

  • Hi Adam,
Why not share the link with them during the Q/A process? Please feel free to share.

  • Hi Shani,
    Happy New Year!
I agree. I have had projects where comments have come in from various departments within their organization. It can be challenging to say the least. Particularly when you have conflicting comments! Then what? One has to go back to the client and ask them to resolve the differing viewpoints. Would be more efficient if this happened in house. It would save everyone time.
If you can foresee this situation I would ask the client to assign a point person on their side. This point person should collect and organize information that comes from within their organization and then provide it to you.

I considered WordPress as being a very easy to use platform so I couldn't understand why would anyone hire a web designer to create their WordPress site. After I tried making one for myself I started to understand why. For a simple site with a pre-existing theme, it's easy. For a business site, one should always contact a designer unless they have programming skills.

  • Matt, I would agree that anytime WordPress/Thesis customization, or personalization, is involved working with a professional can save you hours of your life.

  • For me, making my wordpress site can take minutes to hours and to days depending on the niche, preference, and time.

  • Very nice video. I had a lot of fun watching this.

  • WordPress is getting easier by the minute guys, from doing the plug-ins installation manually to automated and installing the wordpress manually to also automated. It only take minutes to set-up your blog.
